Am I eligible for a
Train Driving
Licence
- 20 years of age at time of starting training (21 to be awarded the licence)
- Completed at least nine years' education (primary and secondary)
- Employd by a Train Operating Company (TOC)
- Successfully completed TOC basic training -
Complete our Level 3 Certificate to demonstrate prior learning and ability to succeed. Find more details

- Passed the required medical examination
- Passed the required occupational psychological fitness examination.
Additional requirements
- Train Operators stipulate that applicants must live within 45 minutes to 1 hour maximum travelling time away from your depot.
You'll also need to demonstrate the following skills:
- Concentration skills
- Ability to be thorough and pay attention to detail
- Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
- Ability to operate and control equipment
- Knowledge of public safety and security
- Observation and recording skills
- Ability to work well with others and on your own
- Knowledge of transport methods, costs and benefits
- Able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device
