Licence Requirements

Am I eligible for a

Train Driving Licence


  • 20 years of age at time of starting training (21 to be awarded the licence)


  • Completed at least nine years' education (primary and secondary)


  • Employd by a Train Operating Company (TOC)


  • Successfully completed TOC basic training - Complete our Level 3 Certificate to demonstrate prior learning and ability to succeed. Find more details HERE.


  • Passed the required medical examination


  • Passed the required occupational psychological fitness examination.



Additional requirements


  • Train Operators stipulate that applicants must live within 45 minutes to 1 hour maximum travelling time away from your depot.


You'll also need to demonstrate the following skills:


  • Concentration skills
  • Ability to be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Ability to operate and control equipment
  • Knowledge of public safety and security
  • Observation and recording skills
  • Ability to work well with others and on your own
  • Knowledge of transport methods, costs and benefits
  • Able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device
