Frequently asked questions
- What are the basic eligibility requirements to be a UK train driver?
- You must be at least 21 (some TOCs accept 18+ via apprenticeship), have the right to work in the UK, meet the ORR eyesight and colour-vision standard, have no recent serious motoring or criminal convictions, be willing to work shifts including nights and weekends, and pass a medical.
- Can I be a train driver with a criminal record?
- It depends on the offence and how long ago it was. Driving offences (especially recent ones with disqualification or careless driving) are the biggest single barrier. Older minor offences are usually disclosable but not disqualifying. Each TOC assesses individually under their safer-recruitment policy.
- Can I apply if I live far from a depot?
- Yes, but you'll be expected to relocate or commute to within reasonable distance of your assigned depot before training school starts. Some TOCs offer a relocation allowance. The /tocs page lists every traincrew depot per operator.
