Outcomes and transparency

Clear outcome indicators from real candidate preparation

Trusted by aspiring drivers across the UK

Why we publish this page

Train driver recruitment is competitive. Preparation should be honest, structured and measurable.

TDF publishes outcome indicators to give candidates a clearer view of the support we provide and the progression reported by people who have used our preparation products. These figures are not presented as railway industry pass rates, and they are not a guarantee of individual success.

Responsible reporting

We focus on transparent internal indicators rather than speculative national pass-rate claims.

Preparation, not shortcuts

Our support is designed around safety-critical behaviours, evidence quality and realistic assessment readiness.

Outcome figures are based on candidate self-reporting and customer review data submitted directly to TDF. They are reviewed periodically and should be treated as indicative progression data only. They are not independently verified railway industry pass rates and do not guarantee that any individual candidate will pass an application, assessment, interview or psychometric stage.

Reported employment outcome

60% of follow-up respondents reported gaining employment as a train driver.

This is a strong outcome indicator for TDF. It suggests that learners are not only completing the training, but that some are progressing into the career they were preparing for.

15 out of 25 reported successfully gaining employment as a train driver. This is self-reported feedback and should be treated as an outcome indicator only, not a guaranteed result.

What the data helps show

These indicators help show whether candidates who use TDF preparation are reporting progression through important parts of the train driver recruitment process.

They also help show whether customers feel the preparation is useful, relevant and worth recommending to others preparing for similar roles.

The strongest value of this data is not that it claims certainty. It gives a practical, transparent signal of how structured preparation is supporting real candidates.

What the data does not mean

These figures should not be read as national recruitment pass rates or as official train operating company data.

A candidate’s outcome will still depend on their eligibility, commute, application evidence, aptitude, performance under assessment, medical suitability and the specific requirements of the operator.

Preparation can improve readiness, but it cannot replace the required standard or guarantee success in a safety-critical recruitment process.

Recruitment context

Why these numbers matter

Train driver recruitment is one of the most competitive career pathways in the UK railway. Applicants are often assessed across several stages before reaching final appointment.

Publicly reported recruitment examples show the level of demand for trainee train driver roles. Northern Trains has previously been reported as receiving over 16,000 applications in a single year, which demonstrates how competitive these vacancies can be.

That Northern example should not be treated as a national average for every train operating company. Recruitment volumes vary significantly depending on operator, depot, campaign timing, location, vacancy numbers and whether the role is advertised internally, externally or both.

For that reason, TDF does not publish speculative national pass rates. Instead, we focus on transparent indicators from our own candidate base, including candidates supported, self-reported progression through key recruitment stages and customer review data.
