Standard Learning Credits
Financial support through SLC
Eligible Service Personnel can able to claim up to £175 per financial year towards approved learning, covering up to 80% of course costs. During resettlement, SLC can support training linked to civilian employment preparation.
CPD course support
SLC can be used towards structured CPD learning during the resettlement phase. If not in resettlement, SLC can still be used for learning that has clear developmental value and supports the learner’s personal development or resettlement aims.
Final two years of service
In the final two years of service, learning linked to a planned transition into civilian employment may be considered as part of resettlement preparation.
SLC + IRTC
For eligible Service Leavers, IRTC may also be used alongside SLC to help cover the learner contribution, subject to the correct resettlement process and approval.

Use the relevant course form when discussing SLC funding with your Education Staff, Learning Centre or resettlement adviser.
Introduction CPD downloads include three MoD F1950 forms: PTS, Traction and Train Driving.
SLC funding is subject to eligibility, prior approval and current single-Service guidance. Applicants should not start or pay for a course before receiving the required approval.

Will CPD guarantee a train driver job?
No. No provider can guarantee employment. CPD can help strengthen your knowledge, confidence and evidence, but applicants must still pass the recruitment process.
Can military experience help with train driver interviews?
Yes, if translated properly. Examples involving rules, safety, responsibility, communication, pressure and concentration can be highly relevant when structured correctly.
Do I need railway experience before applying?
No. Many trainee train drivers come from outside rail. The important point is showing that you understand the role and can evidence the required behaviours.
